Rev. Dr. John Hellwege was installed as the newest member of Concordia Lutheran Seminary's faculty yesterday during the chapel service.


Dr. Hellwege begins his teaching assignment this fall semester with classes in Theological Method for first year students and Faith, Life, and Ethics for second and fourth year students.

Dr. Hellwege received his Master of Divinity in 1999 and a Master of Sacred Theology in 2000, both from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2009 he received a PhD in Historical Theology, also from Concordia Seminary, with a dissertation discussing American Lutheran perceptions of pre-war Nazi Germany.

Dr. Hellwege has served the last seven years as pastor at Emmaus Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Previously he served the dual parish of Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center, Nebraska and St. Peter Lutheran Church in Humphrey, Nebraska.  In addition to parish ministry, he has served as an adjunct professor at Concordia University, Nebraska from 2003-2004, and at Concordia University, Wisconsin - St. Louis Center from 2008-2015. He has also served as a guest lecturer at Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, Missouri) since 2009.

Dr. Hellwege also served as a freelance editor for Concordia Publish House from 2009-2011. He has contributed to three book projects as an editor and writer: The Lutheran Difference, Lutheranism 101, and Law & Gospel: How to Read and Apply the Bible. His academic research has received two awards from Concordia Historical Institute, and he has recently given a plenary paper at Concordia Theological Seminary’s (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) 2015 Annual Symposium on the Lutheran Confessions.
Dr. Hellwege has been married to the love of his life, Denise nee Graeler, for 23 years.  They have four children: Amanda (21), Rachel (19), Laura (15), and Nathan (12).  Amanda and Rachel are in University back in Missouri.  Dr. Hellwege enjoys reading, woodworking, and gardening and has recently earned a black belt in Taekwondo.
