Free Winter Quest class begins next week

“Where did the Bible we use today come from?” with Prof. Jonathan Kraemer is the next blended delivery course in the seminary's ongoing Quest series. It runs for four consecutive Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm MST, beginning January 17th. Participants can attend online or in person at the seminary.
This free Quest course, which takes place in the seminary's distance-education classroom, is supported by your donations. Interim President Appointed

Rev. Dr. Norman Threinen has been appointed interim president of CLS, effective January 1, 2012.

Dr. Threinen joined the faculty of CLS in 1984 as assistant professor. He became a full professor in 1993 and held this position until he retired in 2002. Dr. Threinen also served as Acting President of CLS during the 2003-2004 academic year.

Dr. Threinen takes over as interim president from Rev. Dr. Edwin Lehman who is currently serving as Acting President following the resignation of President Manfred Zeuch on October 27, 2011.

Learn about CLS's involvement in ongoing archaeological project at Hippos, Israel: next Tuesday, Nov. 8th, from 7:00-9:00 pm.

Twenty people have taken part in the Hippos project through CLS since 2006. Dr. Chambers plans to lead another group in July 2012. Participants work on the dig during the week, and tour other places of biblical and archaeological interest on the weekends.

Hippos is a Roman city on the east shore of the Sea of Galilee, inhabited between the 2nd century BC and the 8th century AD. Within the city-wide excavation project, the seminary’s volunteers are part of a larger team from Concordia University (St. Paul, Minnesota) which is focusing on a church-complex. It contains a worship area, a pilgrimage site, the tombs of more than a dozen people, and a luxurious mansion.

This two-hour illustrated talk is a special follow-up to the Quest course, “Let the Stones Speak,” which just ended. Roughly 50 people took part in each of the four sessions, about 20 of them in a seminary classroom and about 30 of them on-line. While Dr. Steve Chambers led the course, Jeff Nachtigall provided technical support, and Ellen Raaflaub brought each night’s snack!

Acting President Appointed

"The CLS Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Edwin Lehman, LCC President Emeritus, to serve as Acting President" was the announcement joyfully received by faculty, staff, and students after the morning chapel service today. This appointment will last until Christmas, at which time the Board intends to have a longer-term Acting President in place.
Dr. Lehman served as Acting President of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in 1999/2000 between the service of Dr. L. Dean Hempelmann and Dr. Andy Bacon. We look forward to working with him again during this time of transition.

To Lutheran Church–Canada,

After prayerful consideration, with my family and with the CLS Board of Regents, I am resigning from my position at Concordia Lutheran Seminary effective October 27, 2011.

It was an honour and privilege for me to follow CLS’ call from Brazil, in January 2007. CLS went through several phases of transition and restructuring, since 2005. I was honoured to lead CLS through the phases of renewal in curriculum and vision, through the times of LCC seminary education changes, brought forth by the Task Force on Cost Efficient Seminary Education, and by the Memorandum of Understanding, voted and adopted in the last convention. Restructuring at CLS has moved on, in the sense of the MOU. Much is still to be done. I believe that my mission and vocation at CLS has now come to an end, and it will be good for other leaders to continue in the path of the agreement reached in June. In the sense of God’s word: One plants, another waters, but God gives the growth. "So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth" (1 Cor 3).

In this common understanding we, myself with CLS’s Board of Regents, pray that God may bless the further work of CLS’ faculty, staff and students, a precious and noble task they are endeavoured to carry out.
May the Lord bless CLS, CLTS and LCC.

The "Archaeology and Jesus" course takes place at the seminary, and online, on Tuesday evenings, and is still open to new registrations.

James Morgan of the Canadian Lutheran posted an article online last Friday titled: Ancient artifacts meet new technology in online course.

“Archaeology enthusiast and seminary professor Dr. Stephen Chambers teaches the course and is extremely pleased with the enrolment. Of the 50 people registered, 18 attend on-site in Edmonton, ten individuals take part online (including two in Ontario), and groups from congregations gather in Saskatoon,Campbell River B.C., and Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.”

“Fitting all the material into two-hour sessions is not easy, but Dr. Chambers covered five of his Top 10 topics of biblical archaeology in the first session. Students saw photos and learned about the ossuaries (burial chests) of James and Caiphas; the Pilate inscription; Yehohanan the crucified man; and the Herodian cities of Caesarea Martima and Jerusalem.”

Even though the first session has already taken place, it is not too late to register. (The first session is recorded so you can catch up!) Anyone can take part from any location. The cost is $40, but the registration fee is waived for pastors, church workers, and individuals who participate as a group at one site.

LCC Synod Convention News

Several seminary faculty and staff have been in Hamilton, Ontario, the last few days, participating fully in the activities of Lutheran Church Canada's 13th Synod Convention. Every three years, Synod Convention is the place where the members of Synod (pastors, deacons, and congregations, through their chosen delegates) discuss, decide, and direct Synod how to act between conventions.

While it may seem curious that CLS sent four of its own across the country to the convention in Hamilton, all four hold distinct roles in the convention process. Dr. Stephen Chambers is an Advisory Delegate as a member of the Synod's Commission on Constitutional Matters and Structure. Dr. Edward Kettner is an Advisory Delegate as the Chairman of the Synod's Commission on Theology and Church Relations. Dr. Manfred Zeuch is an Advisory Delegate as a function of the office of the President of the Seminary. Jeffrey Nachtigall is an Exhibitor responsible for the seminary's exhibit booth, providing information and related material to delegates and guests.

There are many resolutions discussed over the three days of meetings, and while the seminary community likely has some degree of interest in all the resolutions, there is one resolution that many are most interested in hearing about.

Resolution 11.2.02a (see full details at bottom of post), was introduced on Saturday afternoon. Almost immediately, a substitute resolution - to consolidate all seminary activity at a single location, in Edmonton - was moved and seconded from the floor. Through the parliamentary process, the convention, with some discussion, decided to distribute the Memorandum of Understanding to the delegates, and defer the discussion until Sunday's afternoon session. On Sunday, Rev. Nolan Astley, representing the Task Force on Cost-Efficient, Sustainable Seminary Education, presented his overview of the Memorandum of Understanding, and discussion among the delegates continued for nearly an hour. The substitute motion was defeated by a near unanimous vote, and the original motion was passed by a wide margin.

The seminary faculty and staff are grateful to all who have offered past and continued support, look forward to putting this time of uncertainty behind us, and are eager to move forward in increased cooperation with Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Catherines, Ontario.

WHEREAS the synod authorized the Board of Directors (BOD) in Resolution 08.3.04 “To Implement a Cost Efficient Seminary Program for Lutheran Church-Canada;” and

WHEREAS the BOD established a Task Force to devise a cost-efficient seminary program; and

WHEREAS these developments show the willingness of Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton, Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary, St. Catharines, and the BOD to work toward sustainable, cost-efficient seminary training in Canada utilizing the existing two seminaries at their current sites; and

WHEREAS in order to effectively implement Resolution 08.3.04, many complex factors requiring extensive negotiations continue to take place so that Lutheran Church-Canada will have cost-efficient seminary training; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the synod in convention commend all parties involve for their efforts thus far, and for their commitment to continue negotiations in good faith, with the Board of Directors retaining the authority to approve and implement the agreements that are reached; and be it further

Building Missionaries... part 2

Servants for Jesus’ Sake Build A Home, Relationships and Understanding

“Connections” was the theme of CLS's 2011 Servant Event lead by Pastor James Avery, Director of the Missionary Study Centre. From May 9-17 Ian Wemyss, Mark Schultz, Keith Hoveland, Roland Starke, Cody Cooper, Professor Jonathan Kraemer, and Steve Fonnyadt, a homebuilder from Calgary and brother-in-law to Pr. Avery, engaged in building a house addition in Juarez, Mexico with Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care (LCMS), El Paso, Texas. While the main task was to complete a 12ft x 24 ft addition to a home (doubling its size), an equally important task was to build connections with people in the community, with those working for YLM, and with one another. The participants also considered the connections between sharing the mercy of God in word and deed; and the connections between their servant event and the ministry of YLM.

Construction proceeded quickly and was completed after only three and a half days out of the five estimated for the build, despite having to re-shingle the original home in addition to shingling the addition. Even with such quick progress team members regularly took time out from construction to play soccer, basketball and other games with the many curious children who came by the site. Local pastor, Pr. Hernandez of YLM, visited and brought out his guitar, singing songs with the children. Team members were also able to connect with homeowners, Lilia and Jorge.

“This servant event was fantastic” said Professor Jonathan Kraemer “Not only were we able to make a difference in the lives of Lilia and Jorge, but we were able to support the ministry of Pr. Hernandez and to form our students in a way which cannot be duplicated in a classroom. This kind of event forms our students in so many ways; to be compassionate servants of Christ, to reach out with the Gospel of Christ, to make connections with people of every age, nationality, and social standing.”

In addition to the servant event, the group was able to attend three services on Sunday. In El Paso they attended English and Spanish services at San Pablo Lutheran Church. A Spanish service at Santisima Trinidad in Juarez followed in the afternoon. Even at those services the theme of connections was apparent. One student shared “I was moved by both Spanish services on Sunday because I could see how wide the cultural gap was between us and the congregation, yet because of Christ, I also felt a close unity. The same God that called me to faith also called them.”

Preparation for the servant event began almost a year in advance. In addition to making contacts with YLM, Pr. Avery met regularly with those who planned to participate. He not only prepared the group for the servant event, but shared his experience in organizing short-term mission trips so they would be prepared to do the same in their own congregations. Pr. Avery, worked for LAMP for two years and has been involved with various short-term mission trips for an additional 5 years. The group also considered the relation of short-term missions to long-term mission organizations as well as the benefits and challenges of short-term missions.

The groundwork for this trip had been laid long before the crew from CLS began preparing to leave Canada. The couple who were to receive this addition to their house, Lilia and Jorge, had been on a waiting list for four years. Pr. Hernandez, whose ministry is supported by YLM, identified Lilia and Jorge as ones who should receive assistance. Lilia had met Pr. Hernandez through her friend whose home serves as a preaching station. Now with this addition and the small covered area they plan to create, Pr. Hernandez indicated that this is likely to become the location of a new preaching station for the community. CLS's short-term involvement is not the beginning nor the end of the ministry in Juarez, but a crucial part in the long-term ministry of Ysleta Lutheran Mission.

On the final day of construction, a key ceremony was held along with a community organized lunch. Seminary students Cody Cooper and Keith Hoveland led the service, reading the account of Jesus washing the disciples feet and reminding all gathered why the group from CLS was there: “It is because of Jesus’ example of servanthood and the fact that He died for our salvation that made us want to come and build this addition for you…We pray this building will help you to be a blessing to the whole community.”

The servant event was sponsored in large part by the Missionary Study Centre of CLS as well as with donations from congregations and individuals. The MSC was founded in 1997 to assist in the preparation of ministerial candidates who have mission hearts and are not afraid to cross cultural barriers for the sake of the Gospel.

Fostering Pastoral Collegiality

Early this week, CLS held its 2nd annual Pastoral Gathering. Pastors from the Edmonton region and further afield were invited to join in a day of conversation. This year’s forum centered on the topic “The Pastor and Synod.” The discussion was attended about a dozen guests, along with members of the seminary faculty.
The afternoon opened with a keynote address by Dr. Edwin Lehman, president emeritus of Lutheran Church – Canada. He spoke about the proper understanding of synod as a joyful walk together on the same path. It is not a forced lock-step, nor is it an individualistic free-for-all, but it is a walk in which the people move together toward the same goal and look out for one-another’s well-being.
With these thoughts in mind, the group divided into two, with each of these groups discussing two different sets of two theses dealing with the relationship of pastor and synod. These theses were designed to be provocative, and were intended to be open-ended. Opinions and insights were shared. After a forty-minute discussion, the group reassembled. Members of each group spoke about the insights gained from their discussions, as the plenary group continued the conversation. The day then ended with a wine and cheese reception.
Those who were present agreed that the day was both enjoyable and beneficial, as pastors were free to discuss the topics and gain insights from one another and to simply enjoy one another’s company. The seminary looks forward to hosting the 3rd Annual Pastoral Gathering next year.

Where to next? Sacred Convocation; 2 weeks away

That question is front of mind for vicars and candidates at CLS. At the 27th Sacred Convocation on May 27th, five vicars and two pastoral candidates will receive the answer, as they prepare themselves for the next chapter of service in Jesus' name. Darren Dressler, Todd Guggenmos, Vince Moore, James Prophet, and Mark Schultz are awaiting vicarage placements; Ian Wemyss and Lorne Reddemann are awaiting their first call. David Morton, a colloquy student, will also receive his Theological Diploma.

The Sacred Convocation combines into one service, events which used to be divided into three parts. It marks the completion of what is known as the “holy circle,” in which candidates who were given to the seminary by the church to prepare them for service, have completed their education and are now given back to the church for service to the people of God.

After a service of praise and of hearing the word of God, candidates for vicarage (which normally takes place as the third year of the four-year program of pastoral preparation) are presented to receive their assignments to a congregation of Lutheran Church–Canada. These candidates will spend a year under the supervision of an LCC pastor gaining hands-on experience in ministry.

The convocation continues with the granting of degrees. Those entering the ministry receive the degree of Master of Divinity, indicating that they have completed their academic preparation for the holy ministry. This is then followed by the granting of the Theological Diploma, which states that the candidate has been certified for the holy ministry (which includes personal as well as academic suitability). Immediately after receiving the theological diploma, the candidate receives his first call into the holy ministry, thus completing the “holy circle.”

License to Preach

The Master of Divinity program starts with a year-long orientation session. In a sense, this must be what it seems like for first year seminarians. In these eight months they are introduced to isagogics, exegesis, systematics, homiletics, and several other new things cleverly gathered together with theological buzz words. Scott Gamble and Roland Starke have reached that time of the program where they probably feel like the orientation is finally over. You see, one notable milestone for all first year full time Master of Divinity students comes at the completion of a course called Preaching 1. The objective is to learn and practice an orderly method of preaching doctrinally sound, contextually relevant sermons. Major emphases are the sermon writing process, sermon delivery, and distinguishing between Law and Gospel. While enrolled in this course, students received the privilege of preaching twice in worship services of their assigned fieldwork congregations; Scott at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Rev. Vic Esperanza (CLS '01) and Roland at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Hennig (CLS '03).

Once a seminarian completes Preaching 1, he receives a License to Preach in Lutheran Church–Canada, and can also anticipate being scheduled to preach on occasion in the daily seminary chapel services. On Monday, May 2nd, Roland Starke and Scott Gamble received their Preaching Licenses. Please join us in congratulating each of them upon reaching this seminary milestone.

CLS at the Central District Theological Lay School

While the primary activity of the seminary is the formation of future pastors for LCC, the faculty of CLS frequently engages in broader "extension" activity for the purpose of supporting the work of the members of synod. Between final exams and Sacred Convocation, Dr. Zeuch and Dr. Kettner will travel to two different churches in the Central District to serve as instructors in the Central District Theological Lay School.
Dr. Zeuch shares two days of the weeklong program at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario. His module, one of three, is "Ethics for Daily Life".
Dr. Kettner teaches a three day "Catechism for Daily Life" module as part of the weeklong course at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Other instructors include Rev. Mark Dressler (CLS '01), Rev. Garry Heintz (CLS '02), and Rev. Cam Schnarr (CLTS '10).
The goal of the Central District theological Lay School (formerly known as the Lay Leadership School, and the Lay Enrichment School) is to spiritually enrich believers in Christ through in-depth study of the Bible, the Lutheran Confessions, and the practice of the Lutheran Church. A week of courses is made up of three evening and weekend modules; participants can choose to participate in one, two, or all of the modules. The Thunder Bay course runs from May 9th to 15th, the Winnipeg course runs from May 11th to 17th.

2nd Annual Pastoral Gathering

One year ago today, CLS held an inaugural pastoral gathering. Invitations went out to pastors who lived within several hours' drive from the seminary, even as far as British Columbia and Saskatchewan. In April of 2010, twenty-two pastors attended, eager for conversation with their brothers on topics of unique interest. The goal of this gathering was not to be polemical, but to dialogue within a safe, fraternal environment. The gathering discussed uniformity in pastoral practice, pastoral education standards, and the church as leaven in the world, among other interesting topics. The feedback from these LCC pastors was unanimous, they said, “Please provide this opportunity again!”.

The faculty of CLS also felt that the event should be continued, and are hosting the 2nd Annual CLS Pastoral Gathering on Tuesday, May 17 at 2:00pm. Once again, pastors of LCC are invited to gather with CLS faculty to discuss topics of common interest. It is to be a safe place of sharing and mutual edification for the good of the church.

This year's general theme is “Pastor and Synod”, and invited guest, LCC president emeritus Dr. Edwin Lehmann, will open the gathering discussion.

As established last year, the discussions will focus on a set of statements or theses, that are to be submitted in advance. Not intended to be a formal presentation that has to be defended, but a starting point for the discussion of the general theme, the “theses” will guide the conversation so the discussion may be as rich as possible. Please consider submitting a thesis to President Zeuch before May 1st (mzeuch@concordiasem.ab.ca). Suggestions of themes for next year's pastoral gathering are also welcome.

When you think Mexico, do you think of an all-inclusive beach vacation in sunny Cancun or Cozumel? Seven members of the CLS community will spend just over a week in Mexico this May, but rather than a chartered plane and a taxi to the hotel, they will enter Mexico in a 15 passenger van from one of the poorest counties in the United States, crossing the border between El Paso, Texas and Jaurez, Mexico.

As part of the seminary's Missionary For Lunch program, started by Rev. Dr. Ed Lehman in 1997, Rev. James Avery (Mission Study Centre Director and CLS Alum '07) invited Chris Hill and Erin MacKenzie of Yselta Lutheran Mission to make a presentation to the seminary community on April 15, 2011. Chris and Erin spoke with passion about the work that God has given them to do, "People are lost and hurting all over... our mission field is the US/Mexico border". As lunch turned into mid-afternoon, they taught the small group helpful Spanish phrases, and talked about things to expect while in Mexico.

The Ysleta Lutheran Mission began in 1982, and is situated 1 mile from the US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. Their focus is two-fold; church planting and holistic ministry, aiming to serve the body as well as the soul. The mission organizes over 40 servant events annually, facilitating projects on both sides of the border such as church improvement and property maintenance; evangelism; medical, dental, and eyeglass clinics; and repairs to houses and trailers.

In less than one month, not long after final exams have been written, Cody Cooper, Keith Hoveland, Mark Schultz, Roland Starke, Ian Wemyss, Prof. Jonathan Kraemer, and Pastor James Avery will be in El Paso and Jaurez, building a new house for a family who has been "on the waiting list" for four years, and visiting various preaching stations that are supported by the mission. The students will not earn academic credit for their time and energy, but instead will receive a life changing experience that will impact their ministry for many years to come.

The Master of Divinity program seeks to form future pastors through various contextual ministry experiences and servanthood opportunities as part of its co-curricular program. CLS, in partnership with the separately funded Missionary Study Centre, endeavours to offer multiple serving and mission opportunities to students throughout their program, and expects each seminarian to take advantage of such opportunities. You can support this aspect of seminary formation by praying for students as they travel, study, and serve, and by sending donations to the CLS Missionary Study Centre.

[Rev. Anthony Cook] said that “…pastoral formation is not about the delivery of knowledge, attitudes and skills, but it is the formation of the seminary student into pastoral ministry as a way of being.” Rev. Cook reminded faculty members that they are training men to be in this world in a peculiar and different way. “This is not business school where we’re learning procedures. However, we can’t say ‘education doesn’t work online’ because we know it does. What we can say is we’re not sure that the whole process of formation can be done without considerable reflection and work.”
He encouraged the seminaries to pursue online classes that bring students together (synchronous delivery) not as a way to slash budgets, but as a plan for learning and applying the highest educational standards to the on-campus formation program. While little financial benefit is expected, faculty could gain valuable experience in course design and alternate delivery.

CLS facing financial crunch!

Donations from the Christmas season appeal were significantly reduced. The Seminary usually receives a major outpouring of giving at the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Last year at this time we had a positive balance of $198,000; this year, in January, we face a deficit of $148,000.

Simply put, even though the Seminary administration has drastically trimmed costs, and is generally underspending, contributions over the last few months have not met Seminary needs. And since we depend on general donations for 65% of our budget, a reduction of any giving immediately impacts our budgets. CLS does not wish to end the fiscal year with a major deficit!

By donating, you directly make it possible for CLS to form pastors, servants for Jesus’ sake, to witness to salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and to equip lay leaders to testify of their faith and to serve. CLS’ existence depends, this year again, on YOUR HELP AND INVESTMENT. Without it, CLS can’t continue its mission.

To overcome the reduced amount of donations, we are sending an information and appeal letter to LCC congregations and donors across the country this week. CLS Responds to Seminary Task Force Final Report

In December, the president of CLS sent a response to the Board of Directors of Lutheran Church–Canada, outlining the faculty’s concerns about certain statements made in the Final Report of the Task Force on Cost-Efficient, Sustainable Seminary Education. This response focused on three areas which the seminary faculty believes need to be addressed. First is the question of bias and inaccuracies. The faculty believes that the tone of the document makes it appear that the financial situations in Edmonton and St. Catharines are equally in crisis. Second is the issue of pastoral formation. The Report focuses almost exclusively on course delivery, and gives only brief mention to other issues surrounding the formation of pastors, such as character development and pastoral skills, which can take place only with extensive personal contact. Third, the Report falls short in dealing with the practical implications involved in implementing its recommendations.

Seminarians Prepare to Take Wing (and you can help!)

CLS needs two congregations to participate in a weekend of practical experience with a seminarian. Each year, a handful of Western Canadian congregations are matched up with second-year seminarians to share in the Take Wing project which is sponsored by the CLS Guild. Since it began, Take Wing has landed in dozens of Lutheran Church–Canada congregations, from Thunder Bay, Ont., to Vancouver Island and offers students practical experience, assistance for pastors and congregations, and a look at how ministers are made.

On the weekend of January 21st to 23rd, four seminarians are prepared to visit congregations throughout Lutheran Church–Canada. Two congregations have already requested visits, but at this point there is still a need to assign two more. If your congregation would like to participate in this formative and edifying activity, contact Daniel Deyell, the seminary's Director of Development (and coordinator of Take Wing).

Congregations participating in the program are expected to make students feel welcome, greeting them at the airport Friday night and dropping them off Sunday. They are also expected to help students with local transportation and room and board for two nights and the chance to serve.

Guild sponsorship includes cost of travel and a modest stipend for the students.

Congregations are also encouraged to contact the seminary to invite students for future Take Wing experiences.

New Chapel Art

CLS received a unique donation from Cornelis [Neil] Prinsen this summer. Neil is a retired art teacher from Vancouver and a Christian artist who has shown internationally. When he heard about the Seminary's desire to inject art into its physical environment, he offered a relief sculpture that fits wonderfully into the chapel space and brings a focus for reflection as people gather for worship.
“Golgotha” is a triptych in mixed media based on the earlier works of the stations of the cross. Neil uses the tau cross because, he says, “I was afraid the other cross is used so much and has become a cliché. I didn’t want it to be nice. The varnished cross at the front of churches is too nice. I use metal because it’s hard, difficult, tough, like machines of war, hostile. Rough wood is used to keep the image rough. Blackness echoes darkness over whole earth and the darkness of the crucifixion. Red is a reference to blood. I wanted to use text but not to be read. It’s in black on black and runs on in letters to make the words less obvious, they are there to be discovered. The work exhibits a pattern that would every now and then make itself clear.”
The students, faculty, and staff are thankful to Neil for this rich addition to our chapel.

The topic of the week is "How do you present and defend your faith today in a skeptical environment? A course on Christian Apologetics." Our major presenter is Dr. Jonathan Strand, Professor of Philosophy at Concordia University College of Alberta, Edmonton.
The topic of apologetics is one that has become of great importance as our society has become more skeptical. How do we “give a reason for the hope that is within us” (1 Peter 3:15) in the face of skepticism and indeed increasing hostility toward the Christian faith and Christians themselves?
The speaker, Rev. Jonathan Strand, Ph.D, has a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. He received the M.Div. from the seminary of the Association of Free Lutheran Churches, and a Theological Diploma via colloquy from Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton.

The fifth annual “Love Life” conference will be held in Edmonton on Saturday, November 6, 2010, from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. Under the theme “Getting Real about Sexuality: Celebration, Truth, and Consequences,” this year’s conference will consider several life-related issues. The conference features four speakers.

Rev. Dr. Stephen Chambers, is professor of NT Exegetical Theology at Concordia Lutheran Seminary. He will begin the conference by presenting a study on 1 Corinthians 6 with the theme: “Priceless Sex.” Bring your Bible!
Rev. Dr. Roger Sonnenberg, is a noted speaker, author (e.g. Human Sexuality: A Christian Perspective) and LCMS parish pastor. Rev. Sonnenberg will speak on two topics: “Porn: The new Crack Cocaine” and “Realities of the Modern Family.”
Julie Parr, is Community Education coordinator for the Pregnancy Care Centre in Edmonton. Julie will speak about sex, abstinence, and healthy relationships.
Rev. Dr. Bill Anderson, is professor of Religious Studies at Concordia University College of Alberta. Dr. Anderson will present a theological study on human sexuality by looking at Genesis 1-2 and Song of Songs.

Displays will be provided by a range of pro-life groups and individuals.

Each year a seasoned and effective pastor shares his experience from pastoral life for the benefit of CLS students and community at the annual Timothy Lectures. This year's guest is Dr. James Nestingen, Professor Emeritus of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He will speak to students on the topics of Repentance, Confession, and Absolution, drawing on his three decades of experience as a pastor and seminary professor. Throughout the day on Thursday, October 7th (8:45am to 3:00pm), Dr. Nestingen will share three lectures; Law, Gospel and Repentance in Confession; A Broken Narrative: Discerning Repentance in Hearing Confession; and Resolving the Narrative in Christ: Declaring the Absolution.

The Timothy Lectures traditionally provide sound, challenging, practical insight to ministers-in-the-making. Pastors speak in personal and candid ways about their lives in the parish. Founders' Day

For the 26th year, we commemorate the first day of classes at CLS. On September 10th, 1984, the first 10 students met with the founding faculty to begin their formation as servants for Jesus' sake, at Concordia Lutheran Seminary.
Every year since that day, we have gathered during the chapel service (9:50 - 10:20) to give thanks for the blessing of this seminary and those who had the wisdom to establish this institution many years ago.

W. Theophil Janzow, the founding president of CLS, passed away on Saturday, August 21. His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 26 at St. John Lutheran Church, Seward, Nebraska.

Dr. Janzow served as seminary president from 1984 to 1987. Before coming to Edmonton, he served at Concordia College (now Concordia University), Seward, Nebraska, including fourteen years as its president.

Dr. Janzow was truly God's gift to us and so much of his legacy still lives at the seminary. Thank God for him and his work.

The 2009/2010 fiscal year at Concordia Lutheran Seminary ends with a budget surplus.

Despite a lower than anticipated enrolment and the expense of initiating a distance education program, CLS and its faithful supporters have ended the year with more cash flowing in than out.

It goes without saying that this surplus will be applied to the deficit incurred over two years of financial crisis, to assist with the goal of eliminating all debt by the end of 2011.

Paying off debt before 2011

We are rejoicing! Donors from across the country have responded over the last year and a half to the news that Concordia Lutheran Seminary suffered from financial shortage. Hearing the need, individuals, companies, and congregations gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover the costs of running this graduate school. Through their giving people are expressing their excitement for the seminary’s mission and goals, its reason for forming students, the proclamation of the Gospel and the ministry of God’s grace in this world, especially in Canadian LCC churches.
The response came in donations from $10 to $500,000. People are giving out of their gifts and out of their tithes. People are giving sacrificially, sharing not just extra money that could have been used for that regular latté, but giving a donation that takes money away from their regular buying power. Even with the generous support, we still need to gather in more money. As President Zeuch mentioned, we are obligated to pay off the deficit of roughly $150,000 incurred over the last years’ economic downturn. Thankfully, it appears that some surplus will be left over in this year’s budget to pay more than half the deficit, but we want to eliminate the deficit completely.
Concordia Lutheran Seminary depends on the direct donations of supporters; the Synod provides just a small portion of the funds needed for the budget. The Seminary receives no government funding. Over $50,000 a month is needed to cover on-going expenses. That doesn’t include special contributions to endowments or money for capital projects. Endowments help seminary administration with budget forecasting by providing normally consistent earnings.Capital funds are becoming increasingly more important now that our building is twenty years old and starting to show maintenance needs.
The bottom line (as accountants like to say) is continuous need for significant contributions by donors who see the vision and want to support the mission of Concordia Lutheran Seminary. Carol Farrar, former library technician, passed away at the age of 64 years

Carol Farrar passed away unexpectedly at the age of 64 years on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Carol served as library technician since the Seminary’s founding until her retirement in 2004.

She is survived by her loving family, husband, Brian, of 20 years; mother, Pauline Spiece; two daughters, Laura (Gordon) Elsasser and Faye VanHove; two step-daughters, Amelia (Les) Jones and Marcia (Al) Rawlins; nine grandchildren, father and mother-in-law, Les and Lily Farrar as well as numerous family members and many dear friends. Carol was predeceased by her father, John W. "Jack" Spiece.

Cremation has taken place. Carol Farrar's funeral will be July 7th, 11am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Adopt-A-Student Update

Most seminarians come to the Seminary after completing a degree program taking three or four years. The students whether married or single come to Edmonton for two years, go to a church for vicarage for a year and then return for a final year at the seminary in Edmonton. The transitions, although often burdensome, help students to come to terms with real life pastoral situations. The vicarage congregation, Synod, and the seminary closely supervise and participate in the formation of the seminarian as a future pastor.
The Seminary’s Adopt–a–Student program connects community supporters with specific students. The seminary identifies the student to adopt and encourages him to make contact with supporters by supplying information about his studies and himself, including biographies, background and photos. The seminary asks supporters to communicate with the student and to pray regularly for him. Hopefully, too, the student shares his living situation and the adopter supports the student materially as well. All of the donations given through the Adopt–a–Student program go to the adopted student.

Just one day before leaving for Israel, Dr. Chambers writes:

As many of you know, I'm leaving tomorrow (Thurs 17th) to spend 6 weeks in Israel as the first phase of my sabbatical from Concordia Lutheran Seminary. Both in 2006 and in 2008 I wrote a blog while working on the dig at Hippos, and apparently a lot of folks back home enjoyed following it, so I've been encouraged to get it going again this time.
The first entry was just posted this morning, giving an outline of what I'm hoping to be up to during this time away. Obviously you are under no compulsion whatsover to read it! However, if you are interested, by all means I invite you to follow along. If you find it's worth reading, feel free to pass along the link to your family and friends as well.

You might find some other things of interest on that page too. In particular, my blog is listed on the left under "team blogs!" (I'm not sure why it has an exclamation mark). I don't know how often I'll be able to post from Israel during the first two weeks especially since I'm moving around and may not have easy internet access. However, I'll post whenever I can. And from Sunday 3 July onward, web access should be pretty regular-- that's when the whole dig team arrives, including 9 other people who are making this trip in association with our seminary. The U.S.-based folks, who are from Concordia University, St. Paul, MN, will set up a wireless hub after they arrive. So from that point on, if not before, the blog should be pretty regular.
As you can imagine, I'm tremendously excited about the adventure that's about to begin. At the same time, I covet your prayers, not only for my personal safety and well-being but also for the whole dig-team and, more broadly still, all who live and work and visit the Middle East. It's both a beautiful land full of promise and history, and a tense place full of overlapping and competing interests. Distance Learning and Open Studies

Once again, CLS plans to offer a class or two from the regular M.Div. program as synchronous, online options for Open Studies students. The course offerings aren’t finalized yet, but if you are interested in taking a class alongside some first year seminarians, have a completed Bachelor degree (any discipline), and have a home internet connection suitable for 2-way video conferencing, contact Jeff at the seminary for more information.
Classes completed in the Open Studies program (whether on campus or via video conference) are applicable to the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies (GCTS).

CLS Guild Update

Patrick (Pat) Moore is the new President of CLS Guild. Pat and his wife Linda live in Fort Saskatchewan and attend All Saints Lutheran Church. Pat has been active with the Guild since its inception, including past presidency. The Moores are known for their hospitality and especially for providing their backyard barbecue for the Guild executive social in late summer. Other executive members include past president Marilyn Jansen; co-secretaries, Lillian Bulman and Ellen Raaflaub; and treasurer, Hilda Schoepp.
As it has done for years, the Guild continues to provide direct support to the students and their families by raising funds for them, collecting and distributing food, and providing prayer and social support to them. A special thank you goes out again to Guild supporters and especially the Guild representatives from the churches. People from across Canada have responded generously to the membership drive. Many members add donations to the regular $10 membership fee, making a substantial increase to the annual revenues of the Guild. They also bring or send in special packages for the students including food stuffs for the student food hamper.

Seminarians Take Wing

A weekend of practical experience in Western Canadian churches is offered each year to second-year seminarians and sponsored by the CLS Guild. Since it began, Take Wing has landed in 48 Lutheran Church–Canada congregations, from Thunder Bay, Ont., to Vancouver Island and offers students practical experience, assistance for pastors and congregations, and a look at how ministers are made.

On the weekend of February 5th to 7th, five seminarians will visit congregations in Drumheller, Winkler (Manitoba), Calgary, Vancouver,Campbell River, and Victoria.

The seminary's director of development, Daniel Deyell says, “The student returns better prepared for the ministry. His experience boosts confidence for future ministry. Congregants experience firsthand the formation of their pastors. Pastors in the host congregations are helped in their duties for one Sunday and get to mentor ministers-in-the-making. The seminary gets flesh-and-blood exposure in churches...Take Wing is a worthwhile pursuit for everyone involved.”

Congregations participating in the program are expected to make students feel welcome, greeting them at the airport Friday night and dropping them off Sunday. They are also expected to help students with local transportation and room and board for two nights and the chance to serve.

Guild sponsorship includes cost of travel and a modest stipend for the students.

Congregations are also encouraged to contact the seminary to invite students for future Take Wing experiences.

The Blessings of Endowments

A number of renewed and new endowments were recently added to CLS's revenues, especially for student financial aid and operations. Even though last year’s financial markets adversely impacted the Seminary’s finances, we have seen some recovery. And now, the capital base of endowments is bolstered by six new funds set up as memorials to church workers and their family members. A number of other endowments received cash additions to increase their earning power, too.
Among those endowments changed, earnings from the Dr. Eugene and Mrs. Sandra Lechelt Endowment now support faculty needs, the Gabert Family Endowment now also supports student financial aid and the Hermann & Helene Neudecker Endowment has been broadened in scope. Recently added funds include the Samuel Gabert Endowment, Fifth Faculty Endowment, David & Ione Gitzel Endowment, Rev. Dr. Elroy Treit Endowment, Chris & Esther Gabert Endowment, and Jack & Linda Mackellar Endowment.

Live online course for Laity

This winter, CLS offers an online non-credit extension course using a video conference distance delivery format for the first time.
What does this mean? Pres. Manfred Zeuch will be offering a Quest course over four Tuesdays in January and February covering the topic of Christian Ethics for Daily Life. We will bring participants to the class from across the country through the use of video conferencing technology. If you have access to a computer with a browser and high speed internet, you can take part in this course! As a participant, you will log in to the website to see and hear the live lecture each Tuesday, and you will be able to ask questions by typing into an online chat (much like Messenger or Skype). More technical information can be found here. This first trial for online extension courses has a nominal registration fee of $25 per person.

Seminarians to travel to Thailand and Cambodia

If you heard about a seminary course on parish immersion you would likely visualize seminary students working with a local pastor and congregation; but a different look at parish life is in store for 2nd year seminarians. For the first time, CLS is taking a group of five seminary students to Southeast Asia to see how parishes operate in a very different environment. From December 31st to January 21st, Dr. Edward Kettner, who is travelling to Thailand and Cambodia to teach seminary courses, will accompany the students, Stephen Bartlett, Michael Montague, James Prophet, Darren Dressler and Timothy Schneider as they encounter a new culture. The trip is funded from the seminary’s Missionary Study Centre grant provided by the Marvin M. Schwan Foundation.
Although this is the first time the seminary has taught the parish immersion course overseas, several years ago two students accompanied Dr. Norman Threinen to Ukraine.
“This approach reflects the practical focus of our curriculum,” explained Dr. Kettner, who also serves as academic dean. “From my own experience, I know this experience will play an important role in the pastoral formation of these students.”
“It’s important that LCC’s seminary students have the opportunity to experience a mission field,” noted Dr. Kettner. “Some of them may discover a new area of ministry to which the Lord may be calling them.”

German Christmas Service / Deutscher Weihnachtsgottesdienst

CLS presents a German Advent and Christmas service with traditional hymn and carol singing in the German language on Sunday, December 20th, 2009, from 4:00 – 5:30 P.M. in the seminary chapel.

The service will include German readings from the Scriptures, German Christmas Carols, and a message preached in German by seminary president, Dr. Manfred Zeuch. Whether or not you speak and understand the German language, all are invited to attend and join this celebration of our Lord’s birth.

Those who attend will join the congregation in singing popular carols from around the world. Dr. Wilhelm Weber visits CLS

Dr. Wilhelm Weber Jr., Rector of Lutheran TheologicalSeminary Tshwane near Pretoria, South Africa dropped in for a visit and meeting recently to discuss potential cooperation between LTS Tschwane and CLS. He was able to present an impromptu informational session for the Seminary community, including vicars and vicarage supervisors who were meeting in Edmonton. Dr. Weber spoke about the opportunities and challenges of working with a Lutheran Seminary in southern Africa.

As part of the International Lutheran Council, LTS Tshwane works with churches and seminaries in Africa and other countries such as Canada (CLS and CLTS as part of Lutheran Church–Canada) and the United States (Concordia Seminary as part of Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod). In fact, Dr. Zeuch is scheduled to visit and teach at LTS Tshwane next year.

In the midst of the economic hardships across African countries,Lutheran churches are growing and needing trained pastors for their churches. CLS wants to work with seminaries like LTS Tshwane and others in countries around the world like, for instance, Brazil, to develop programs that can meet the needs of church workers who are called to proclaim the Gospel and administer the sacraments.

CLS in Cambodia?

Dr. Stephen Chambers spent two weeks in Southeast Asia in January. This was his second stint as visiting professor at Luther Institute-Southeast Asia (LISA), after a March 2008 visit teaching Christian Worship. The topic this time was Romans. “It was a challenge to cover the whole book in a week,” he reflected after returning home. “We had to move pretty fast, covering four chapters a day.”

The LISA classes operate very differently than CLS’ seminary program. The students are already serving as either pastors or deaconesses in their home communities, and travel to one of the two seminary locations (Bangkok, Thailand, and Phnom Penh, Cambodia) for week-long courses, four or five times a year. Pastors and seminary professors from North America—mostly from LCC but also from the LCMS—fly in to lead each intense, high-energy course.

The Romans course was the 11th in a series of 14 courses, which LISA students will complete by March 2010. At that point, each of them will be able to formally join the emerging Lutheran church association in their nation, as a rostered churchworker. Already, most of the students in both countries have indicated that they plan to do this. “Each course in the sequence helps them understand Lutheran theology a little better,” Chambers said. “They’re coming to see, more and more, that what we teach and practice is drawn straight from the Scriptures.”

An obvious difference from teaching at CLS was the need to use a translator. “Following a foreign teacher’s ideas and translating them into Thai and Khmer is hard work,” Chambers said. “In both places, two translators took turns spelling each other off, so neither one would get too tired.” Learning to slow down so the translator time could keep up was sometimes hard for the professor, too.

Often, though, the greatest challenge wasn’t just translating words, but crossing cultural gaps. “In Cambodia,” Chambers said, “students were fascinated but also deeply troubled by Paul’s command in Romans 13 to submit to the governing authorities. In light of their country’s horrific experiences under the Khmer Rouge and then during the Vietnamese occupation, they really struggled with these ideas.” In that sense, the professor learned as much from the experience as did his students. “I came home with a deeper respect than ever for the need to read the Scriptures contextually—taking into account not only their original context, but also our context. We don’t all hear the Word in exactly the same way.”

Serving an emerging church… and enriching his own ability as a teacher. “These are the two big reasons I’m so excited about teaching overseas,” Chambers said. “Considering how small CLS is, it’s absolutely amazing that we get these kinds of opportunities, both to serve and to grow.”

Funding for CLS involvement in Thailand and Cambodia is provided byLISA. Dr. Edward Kettner has also taught in both locations. Discussions are underway for possible MDiv student involvement in CLS's contribution to the churches in Southeast Asia.

February 14-15th he visited Dan Barr vicaring at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Kitimat, B.C. under the supervision of Pastor Visser of Vanderhoof Lutheran Church, Vanderhoof B.C. February 28-March 1 he visited Jeff Dul, who is vicaring at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waterloo, ON under the supervision of Pastor Krestick. The two vicarage congregations are separated by over 4500 km.

Professor Jonathan Kraemer visited Vicar Ling Pui Yeong and his Vicarage Supervisor, Pastor David Hilderman in Abbotsford, BC the weekend of February 7-8. Visits by the Director of Vicarage occur after the halfway point of the vicarage year and are an opportunity to review the progress made during the first portion of the vicarage. It is also an opportunity to greet the vicarage congregation and to thank them for role they are playing in forming future pastors for Lutheran Church Canada. "We give thanks to God for congregations like Trinity Lutheran Church and Pastor Hilderman who give of themselves and of their resources in order to mentor a vicar for the year"

Online Donations

With the addition of a button and a link, it is now possible to make financial contributions to CLS via the web site. Payments by credit card (Visa or MC) are accepted and processed immediately.

After a number of requests, the Seminary moved to online donations so that donors could contribute to the financial needs easily and effortlessly. Donors will be issued tax-deductible receipts on all qualifying donations.

The added means of making donations comes as CLS looks for growing funding. A larger than usual proportion of the graduate school’s budget needs come from private donors (both corporate [businesses and congregations] and individuals [or couples]). Current needs include operations expenses, capital repairs and refurbishment, and the funding of a fifth faculty member.

First Annual Research Forum

On September 11 CLS promoted its first Annual Research Forum. Faculty and a guest presenter discussed the Theological research they completed in the past year.

A graduate school's vocation - as it is for any university - is carried out on a triangular basis, with each point supporting and sustaining the others:

· Teaching (in the sense of formal education)
· Research
· Extension

As an academic place, our school is also a place, then, where knowledge is revisited, built and shared in formal and informal education.

Our seminary supports each professor's research by allocating time and means for formal research. Each year, research projects are received and approved; completed projects are shared with the larger community; and final results of each project are evaluated for publication in various ways: either as research articles in specialized journals, or as a doctoral thesis, or as a book.

The inaugural forum’s guest presenter was Rev. Mark Sander, pastor in Mannsville, AB, who shared his own current theological work.

Rev. David Hilderman presents the Fall 2008 Timothy Lectures

Concordia Lutheran Seminary presented the annual Timothy Lectures featuring Pastor David Hilderman on September 18th. The Timothy lectures are presented each year so that students, especially, can benefit from the experience of seasoned and effective pastors. Each program focuses on a particular aspect of the pastors’ parish ministry. Again, the Seminary is grateful for the generous support from a local anonymous donor.

Pastor Hilderman’s lectures dealt with church worker physical and mental health built around the theme: “Wounds for Christ; declining church worker health & future hope.” He questioned not only whether church workers were healthier or sicker, but why and how? His discussion introduced indicators of health and systems, specifically Bowen Systems Theory, to address worker and institutional health. With the audience he surveyed models, books, resources, and personnel that have distinguished themselves in the field. Using a biblical approach Pastor Hilderman talked about church worker health and its applications to the parish.

Rev. Hilderman has served as pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Abbotsford since 1997. His education included studies at the University of Saskatchewan, Lutheran Theological Seminary and others. His experience includes service in pasrish ministry, as a college teacher, and as a prison chaplain of Canada. He has also served on boards and task forces for the church.

Opening Service for the Academic Year 2008-2009

Bethel Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park, AB hosted the opening service of the 25th academic year at CLS on September 7th. The Seminary community rejoiced that God has provided seventeen M.Div. students (two fourth-year, one third year, three vicars, six second-year, five first-year), one P.A.T. student, one M.T.S. student, one Open Studies student, and five colloquy students. They come from across Canada and from Hong Kong! They bring diverse life experiences as married and single, former members of the work force and recently graduated students.

Over 275 people gathered to worship and praise God for His faithfulness in building and preserving the LCC’s Seminary in Western Canada. Rev. Jonathan Kraemer, Assistant Professor of Old Testament Exegetical Theology at the Seminary, gave the message from Lamentations 3:23, “Great is Your Faithfulness,” this year’s theme. Bethel’s sanctuary resounded to the liturgy of the faithful augmented by a great number of musicians and voices. Celebrants and readers included pastors from the Edmonton area. Administrative Assistant, Karen Sorensen, was recognized for five years of service to the Seminary. An offering gave opportunity for the people to praise God and support the Seminary through financial gifts too.

Missionary Symposium in Brazil

June 2-4, 2008, Prof. Jonathan Kraemer, Director of the Missionary Study Centre, participated in the Mission Symposium of the C.I.T.M., the Centro Internacional de Treinamento Missionário (International Center of Missionary Training). Prof. Kraemer participated in response to the invitation by Prof. Anselmo Graf (Coordinator of C.I.T.M. and professor of Seminário Concórdia in São Leopoldo, Brazil) to CLS.

The Mission Symposium is held every 2 years under the heading of different themes in mission studies and draws pastors, professors, students and laypeople from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The theme for this year’s symposium was “Evangelistic Methods, Theology and Practice” and featured speakers Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz of Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne and Dr. Leonardo Neitzel of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vancouver and adjunct professor also of CLS. One portion of the symposium was dedicated to hearing from representatives of each Church of the evangelistic efforts being undertaken in their respective Churches. Prof. Kraemer who represented Lutheran Church – Canada focused his presentation upon the challenges remote communities, particularly First Nation communities, present to evangelism to and with those communities (including pastoral formation of leaders within those communities). The C.I.T.M. was inaugurated in 1996 and, though for a brief time its work was suspended in 2003, this was the second Mission Symposium since it was restarted in 2006. Though the Mission Symposium is the main focus of the work of the C.I.T.M., the possibility of holding regional conferences throughout Brazil is being explored.

Prof. Kraemer’s participation in the conference allowed him to meet many of the faculty and students at Seminário Concórdia, including teaching a class period of Missiology with Prof. Anselmo Graf after the conference. “It was a great experience to meet our brothers and sisters in Christ of the Igreja Evangelica Luterana do Brazil and colleagues of our sister seminary,” commented Kraemer “and I look forward to increased cooperation in the future.” Director Gerson Linden of Seminário Concórdia is scheduled to be the key-note speaker for Luther Countdown in 2009.

CLS Student Receives Prestigious National Ministry Fellowship

Quinn C. Moerike, a second-year Master of Divinity student at CLS, has been recognized as a young leader who demonstrates exceptional gifts for ministry by The Fund for Theological Education (FTE). As a recipient of a 2008 FTE Ministry Fellowship, Moerike will receive $10,000 for educational expenses and to fund a self-designed summer project to enrich his formation as a ministerial leader. He will also attend a leadership development program and the 2008 FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry June 8-15 at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology in Atlanta.

Dr. Edward G. Kettner nominated Moerike for the fellowship award.

FTE Ministry Fellows are selected competitively from a pool of applicants across the U.S. and Canada. They must be nominated by their seminary dean or president, have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 at the end of their first academic term and possess intellectual and interpersonal gifts for pastoral leadership. The 2008 FTE Ministry Fellows were chosen by a national committee of theological educators and church leaders.

The fellowships are awarded annually as part of the Fund’s objective to increase the number of highly capable young people preparing for ordained ministry as a profession.

“The need for qualified, faithful leadership—for the church and for the common good—is a national issue for congregations, communities and everyone who cares about the health and vitality of the church and society,” said Rev. Echols Purdum, director of FTE Ministry Fellowships. “The church needs the energy, intellect and idealism that these candidates bring—to be the bright and compassionate leaders our world needs, servant leaders of integrity and character.”

BC Mission Boat

From May 20-29, nine students and Prof. Kraemer took part in a mission trip with the BC Mission Boat Society to two different First Nations communities on the B.C. coast. This trip, sponsored by the Missionary Study Centre, was also to fulfill the requirements for a course entitled “Parish Ministry Immersion” and which focuses on the issues of ministering cross-culturally. Half of the students traveled to Kingcome, BC by water taxi where they observed Heritage Days and lead the youth and children of the communities in Soccer and other games. The other half travelled to Klemtu, BC by Grumman Goose (an amphibious airplane). There they led a VBS for the children of the community, participated in sports nights at the community’s gymnasium, led Sunday service and visited many people of the community in their homes. Marcus Huff, Program Coordinator of the BC Mission Boat Society, and Pastor Craig Tufts of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Parksville led the students through an orientation before going out and a debriefing on their return. The students through this experience were able to wrestle with challenging and thought-provoking issues such as ministering cross-culturally, the relationship between mission societies and the congregations who found and support them, and the place of short-term missions and mission societies in Lutheran Church-Canada. A special thank you goes out to Marcus Huff and Pastor Craig who made the many of the arrangements and preparations for the trip and the wonderful people of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Parksville who opened their homes, fed and transported the seminary group.

Seminary Evaluates & Plans 2008-2009

The Seminary’s Second Annual Institutional Evaluation Meeting took place May 27nd at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Edmonton. The evaluation meeting was conducted in an open spirit of self-critical discussion and constructive encouragement, including lively conversation and good food.

The yearly meeting follows the individual staff and facultyself-evaluation process and results in reports that are orally presented and approved by the institution’s leadership and relevant governance bodies. The review looked at short and long term objectives, weaknesses and strengths, and proposals for the coming year for the institution and each of its departments as well as the external and internal constraints under which it operates.

Opportunities and challenges wereidentified, and strategies were proposed for institutional growth and improvement. Faculty, Board members, staff, and volunteers participated. Personnel and departments asked for special focus on major concerns in their current development and areas of change.

Sacred Convocation

The 24th Academic Year comes to a close tonight at the Robert Tegler Student Centre of Concordia University College of Alberta beginning at 7:00pm. Placement details will be posted here after the ceremony.

The Candidates for both the Degree of Master of Divinity and Theological Diploma are Curtis Mark Boehm of Langley, British Columbia and Murray Roy Keith of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Their research topics are The Practice of Spiritual Retreat and Defending the Truth to a Relativistic Culture, respectively.

The Vicarage class of 2008 is Dan Barr of Barrhead, Alberta, Jeffery B. Dul of Edmonton, Alberta, and Ling Pui Yeong of Hong Kong.

Our guest speaker is The Rev. Dr. Gerald Krispin, President of Concordia University College of Alberta.

A Visit to Kitimat

Prof. Jonathan Kraemer, Director of Vicarage, recently (the weekend of Feb. 9-10) visited Vicar Clint Magnus and family. Vicar Clint was assigned as the vicar of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kitimat, B.C. but has also conducted Bible studies and services in nearby Terrace. Pastor Alan Visser of Zion Lutheran Church in Prince George is serving as Vicar Clint’s vicarage supervisor. Prof. Kraemer reports that Joyce and Clint, as well as children Hillary and Marshall have enjoyed their time in Kitimat and give thanks to God for all the experiences they have had there. Vicarage, normally the third year of the four year M.Div. program, is a year of immersion in the practical aspects of ministry in a congregation of Lutheran Church-Canada under the mentorship of an experienced Pastor. The Director of Vicarage normally visits the vicars during the year to receive evaluation from the supervising pastor and vicar on the vicar’s progress, to express support for the vicar’s wife and family, and to thank the vicarage congregation for their partnership in the important task of forming “Servants for Jesus’ Sake.”

RUSH event, March 14th

Once again, the seminarians are hosting a RUSH event for all local youth. The theme for the event is Press on Toward the Goal, and features worship, games, fellowship, fun, and a chance to compete for the Roadkill Cup. The event begins at 7pm on Friday evening, and is intended for those age 12 and up.

Placement process underway

It's that time of year when graduating students are starting to look forward to serving in their first parish. They will be assigned to their first calls at Sacred Convocation on Friday, May 2nd. Between now and then, LCC's "Placement Committee" will be matching each graduating student with a parish that has requested a pastoral candidate.

The Director of Placement, Dr. Chambers, has now completed interviews with this year's grads and will be representing them throughout the entire process. It's a time of anticipation... and anxiety. Your prayers for the graduating students, and the parishes seeking a new pastor, are most welcome.

The Ministerial Program Committee (MPC) is also meeting this week. On Friday, Feb.22nd, the five members of CLS' MPC will interview first- and second-year students. The committee hopes to be able to recommend to the faculty that all of the first-year men be accepted as candidates for the seminary's "Theological Diploma," leading to a pastorate in Lutheran Church-Canada.

With the second-year students, the committee anticipates recommending that they be assigned to full-year vicarages during the 2008-2009 academic year.

New crucifix for CLS chapel

An original sculpture by Edmonton artist Kenneth Manning was recently donated by the Seminary Guild. The crucifix hangs 130 cm above the altar on the chapel’s outside wall against the panorama of the North Saskatchewan River valley. The cross was blessed and consecrated by President Zeuch on February 7th in a chapel service lead by Professor Kraemer. The service had a theme of “contemplating the holy of Christ.” The congregation also sang, “When I survey the Wondrous Cross.”

Lutheran theology and spirituality tends to emphasize a crucifix rather than an empty cross for the altar, understanding that Christ became flesh and still remains with us also in his human nature. He gives His real body and blood in the Holy Supper. The image in wood of the suffering Christ, on the cross, is to be a devotional object for our faith. It symbolizes and reminds us of our sins and His sacrifice for our salvation. In Him, dead but resurrected for us, we have new life. Thus CLS also has an empty cross standing beside the altar and the crucifix.

May the contemplation of His salvation work for us bless and strengthen the faith of each one who enters the chapel of Concordia Lutheran Seminary and worships with our community!

Missionary for Lunch

Last week, the faculty and students were blessed to hear from Martin Weber of Lutheran Bible Translators of Canada (LBT). Martin and his wife Joan have worked on Bible translation and literacy with the Kwanja people since they went to Cameroon in 1982. Martin and Joan, with co-workers Jerome and Emmanuel, finished typesetting the Kwanja New Testament in December 2005. The New Testament was dedicated in Yimbéré, Cameroon with great celebration December 30, 2006.

The mission of Lutheran Bible Translators of Canada is to help bring people to faith in Jesus Christ by making the Word of God available to those who do not yet have it in the language of their hearts.
